As Mani mentioned in the interviews, Kadal is is a 'good vs evil' film.

The good man, Sam (Aravindswamy) and Satan, Bergmans (Arjun) are brothers in a Seminary, with Bergmans having joined the Seminary to feed himself and his poor family and Sam, to serve the Lord. Bergmans is thrown out from the Seminary, as Sam reports to his superiors that Bergmans has broken the oath of Celibacy. Thus begins the 'good vs evil' fight which forms the crux of the film.

Several years later, Sam, now a catholic Father, comes to a village, where he mentors Thomas, an orphaned kid who grows up to be a handsome young fisherman. The good vs evil fight restarts, this time with Thomas joining in. Meanwhile, Thomas is smitten by Beatrice, a nurse. Questions like where does Thomas and Bea fit in this fight, do they get together, how does good triumph evil are answered as the second half of the film unties all the knots.

Mani Ratnam and Jayamohan have woven a beautiful script, which keeps you interested till the end. The efforts taken by them to bring in the nativity of a fishing village is so evident. At the end of the film, you feel like you've visited the village and lived there.

Arjun as the unapologetic satan and Aravindswamy as the oh-so-pure Father and Thomas' mentor, have played their parts well, though Arjun reminds us of Pugazhendhi from Mudhalvan, especially during the climax. Gautham Karthik looks promising and is convincing in his role as Thomas. Thulasi Nair is apt as the emotionally immature, childlike Beatrice.

The album, one of Rahman's best in the last 5 years, is already a big hit, with people eagerly waiting for each song in the theater. AR Rahman has worked equally hard for the background score too, with each cue fitting perfectly to the mood. I already can not wait to get my hands on the voice-less BGM tracks.

Rajeev Menon proves why he is among the best cinematographers here. The vibrant sea, the pristine beach, the church look so beautiful. The highlight is the climax scene in on the boat, with the boat tossing and turning due to the storm. Hats off, Rajeev Menon!

My only big grouse with this film is the way in which the songs were used in the film. Lakshmi Manchu once tweeted (https://twitter.com/LakshmiManchu/status/270745822809968641) that Nenjukkulle was picturised on her, but for some reason the song has been removed. The song is now played in the background for Gautham-Thulasi. Chithtirai Nila was used in bits and pieces three times in the film and Anbin Vaasale was pushed to end credits. However, the use of Magudi when Gautam turns 'evil' is just perfect. The most brilliant part of the song and the usage in the film is the 'devil' telling him in her seductive voice that once he has embraced 'her', he'll not be able to redeem himself and he'll dance as per her tunes (naan magudi daa, nee paambu).

Kadal is not a typical Mani Ratnam film. He has ventured in to new territory - in to a zone he is not comfortable with - has come out with flying colours. Kadal is a must watch. I'd rate Kadal 4 out of 5. It's one of the best tamil films in recent times (PS: I haven't watched Vishwaroopam yet).

*Warning: Could contain spoilers*

As a fan of Kamal's comedy movies, I was eagerly looking forward to Manmadhan Ambu. Reviews from my friends who watched it first, were not encouraging, but press/media reviews were mostly positive.

I went to the theater with an open mind. As the movie kept unfolding, I was being drawn into it. As Ambu realizes the truth, and the movie breaks for intermission, I was so in awe of the film. I felt, after such a lovely first half, nothing could go wrong to make it bad. I was wondering how this movie could get negative reviews! I was thinking to myself that it didn’t deserve the bad reviews it got.

Post the intermission too, it was all going fine. Till the last 20 mins, where Mannar and co, start making plans to stage a “drama”. That’s where the film lost track. To me, the movie till that point and post that looked like two different films. First, a very mature story, and then, a very childish slapstick episode.

I felt cheated. Totally. It was as though the filmmakers were making a mockery of the audience, for having en the first half so seriously and building up expectations.

It is not that I hate slapstick comedies. I loved MMKR. Hell, I love Kadhala Kadhala too. And, the last 20 mins of MA kept reminding me of Kadhala Kadhala. But, while similar strategy worked in KK, it didn’t work in MA. But, why would that happen? When you watch KK, you are prepared for slapstick for, it is slapstick from start till end. You go there for slapstick, you get slapstick. You are happy.

In case of MMA, there are very few laughs in the first half (though the ads and promos project this as a full-length comedy), but I loved the few comedy sequences as none of it was not forced. It is as though, just to justify that it is a comedy movie, all the final nonsense was forced in. But, why do that? Why project it as a comedy movie?

To me, it looked like Kamal & Ravikumar co somehow weren't clear what they want to serve. After a classy first half, they probably got worried that it was not mass enough, and tried to make it slapstick! And, that's why it didn't work for me!

That's what the makers of Simbu's new movie 'Kaalai' claim, in their promos of the film!
See for yourself!

Is this similar to "injurious to health" warnings on cigarette packs?

BTW, we all know what KaaLai is, but why taint Rajni's Murattu Kaalai?

Being a fan of Madhavan, I've been waiting for this movie right from the time it was announced. The fact that Director Nishikanth Kaamath won a national award for Dombivili Fast (the movie of which Evano Oruvan is a remake) raised my expectations! And, well... I loved the movie!

The movie revolves around a bank employee, Sridhar Vasudevan (Madhavan) who leads a very normal and routine life with his nagging wife Vathsala (Sangeetha) and his two kids. We see glimpses of his righteousness, and also his helplessness when he comes across instances of corruption or people breaking rules. But all his helplessness changes when Vathsala provokes him. The erstwhile helpless Vasudevan erupts. What follows is a one-man-trying-to-change-the-system story.

We have seen so many such movies - be it Indian, Ramana or Anniyan. What makes Evano Oruvan different is that it is closer to reality, unlike the other movies which have more of a fantasy feel to it. The protagonist is not a super-hero which is usually the case in such movies. The hero doesn't succeed in his quest to change the whole world all alone. The movie is a show of anger against the society and the way we have allowed anyone to break the law with out any fear, and the helplessness of the middle class!

Madhavan excels in this movie - both with as an actor and a dialogue writer. There are some really sharp dialogues through out the movie. The resignation letter that he addresses to God is brilliant! So are the dialogues of the poilce inspector (Seeman) when he knows he is helpless in many scenes including the discussion he has with his wife!

Seeman fits perfectly into the role of a police officer who is torn between his conscience and his assigned police duty. And, so does Sangeetha as a nagging wife. The two kids who play Maddy's kids are so natural. It is refreshing to see kids portrayed like this, rather the usual oversmart "adhiga prasangi" kid characters (like in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, for instance).

Kudos to Madhavan for taking the initiative to produce meaningful cinema in Tamil without sans commercial elements like duets, item numbers and cliched fight sequences. Hope we get to see more such meaningful cinema in Tamil.

I'm talking about the print ads for Mozhi director Radha Mohan's next movie "Abhiyum Naanum".

So simple, so cute.. what more can i say!!!

Two very unconventional movies released this year - RDB & LRMB. Both are very different - the plot, the way of storytelling, the theme everything is different... but, hey.... there are some interesting co-incidences between these two movies!
  • Both of these movies talk about philosophies of freedom fighters (Gandhigiri in LRMB and the Bhagat Singh's strategy of sacrificing himself so that the world gets to know their views, in RDB).
  • To reach out to the masses, the protagonists in both films use Radio as the medium!
  • Both are unconventional and fresh themes - unlike the usual family drama stuff or skin flicks that are churned out these days
  • Both are hugely successful
  • Both are going to Oscars!
Interesting, isn't it?

It was just a coincidence that I watched Lage Raho Munnabhai on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti for I did not know that the movie was even related to Mahatma Gandhi.

Munnabhai and Circuit are back - this time, with a different message and a different story - What happens when a Bambaiyya don "meets" Mahatma! Though the movie is filled out and out with comedy, it doesn't just stop there - it also delivers the strong message of "Gandhigiri"(Munna's term for 'being Gandhivaadhi'!). Bambaiyya hindi used throughout the movie is enjoyable!

Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi shine throughout the movie - be it in the comic scenes or the emotional ones. Boman Irani as a Punjabi builder, gets ample footage and he does a brilliant job!
Jhanvi - Munnabhai
The gorgeous Vidya Balan plays the role of Jhaanvi, a bubbly Worldspace RJ. There is not much screentime for her in this movie, but she has done her bit perfectly! Her "Good Morniiinnnnnnnnng Mumbaaaaai" has become famous and is already being commonly used by youth when they meet thier friends and also in Yahoo Chats!
Check out Jhanvi's Good Morniiiinnnnng Mumbai clip here

Dialogues were good in many places, especially the ones carrying Gandhiji's messages. Some of my favourites:

"chaata maarna aasaan hai, maafi maangne ke liye himmat chahiye, beta.. yeh kaarayon ka kaam nahin hai" (It is easy to slap someone, but to apologise, one needs courage. It is not something for cowards.)
Gandhiji - Munnabhai
"Bhai, mujhe to barso pehle maar diya tha.. Par mere vichaaar teen goliyon se nahin marne wale hain." (I was assassinated years back, but my thoughts are not the ones which die because of 3 bullets!)

"Bachpan mein jab tu jhooth bolti thi, to tera baap taxi pakad ke bhaag jaata tha kya?"

Films like Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai are the only hopes of saving Bollywood from the Karan Johars of the world! Kudos to Vidhu Vinod Chopra & Rajkumar Hirani for this brilliant effort.

Positives: Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and of course, the theme of "Gandhigiri".
Negatives: Gets a bit preachy, but it is inevitable.

Kya jhakaas movie hai! Aise picture
bahut kam ich dekhne ko milte hain aajkal... Apun bolta hai, miss nahin karne ka, maamoo!

Update: The melody "Pal Pal Pal" from this movie is a total copy of the song "Theme for a dream" by Cliff Richard. Shantanu Moitra too joins the list of Copycats!!!
Listen to both the songs here.

Yes.... Rang De Basanti is India's entry to Oscars 2006.
It's official: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti is India's entry to the Oscars next year. So, Aamir Khan heads to the Oscars yet again.

http://in.rediff.com/movies/2006/sep/25rdb.htm

And, the second one?
Deepa Mehta's Water will be Canada's Official entry to Oscars.

Canada has set a record for foreign Oscar submissions by nominating a Hindi-language film, the Deepa Mehta-directed Water. Delhi-raised Mehta has made Toronto her home for over two decades and Water is the most successful of the seven films she has made in 15 years.

Rang De Basanti music is creating waves! In Channel [V] Top 20 this week, top 5 songs were from RDB!!!
5. Lalkaar
4. Khalbali
3. Rang De Basanti
2. Paathshaala
1. Roobaroo

MTV's 1-2-3 also had a similar pattern!!! That is the magic of A.R.Rahman! Mr. Taran Adarsh, where are you?

Adding on about RDB, here is a kadi:
If Dharmendra wants Hemamalini to call him up, what will he tell her?
Ring De Basanti!

Becoz this post is about something else.

Finally, got to watch RDB today - and one word that came to my mind - BRILLIANT!
I could spot lots of technical brilliance sprinkled throughout the movie. The transitions from past to present, and back - mannn.. too good!! I got goosebumps in many such scenes! Rakeysh Mehra gets a pat on the back for the way the songs are used in the movie. ARR's background music is mindblowing - few which I remember are the Khalbali remix that comes during the starting titles, the Anupam Kher-Siddharth scene and the Lukka Chuppi flute instrumental! For those (including me) who felt that there is very less of flute usage in the songs, good news is that ARR has made up for all that in the BGMs. There are lots of mesmerising flute bits in many points in the movie. Prasoon Joshi shows his class with wonderful lyrics and dialogues. The youthful comedy and one-liners that run throughout the movie are refreshing. Aamir Khan and co have done a great job on screen! Overall, a great movie!

Quite heartening to see that a non-conventional movie is doing good in box office collections too!

(However, there is someone who actually finds the movie and the music very very ordinary - Mr. Taran Adarsh of IndiaFM !!! Here's the biased, pathetic review by Taran and a rejoinder to it which i found in a blog!)

Posters of Jillendru Oru Kadhal were seen all over Chennai - these were to announce the commencement of shooting for the movie. What's special about the posters? One set of posters had just ARRs foto - not even fotos of the movie's hero Surya. At a time when ARR's wonderful melodies are wasted by poor publicity, this is a welcome change!

It seems Deepa Mehta's Water may not release in India, thanks to the protests by the Hindu Fundamentalists :( So, the music too will not release in India. Water is the only album for which Rahman himself has given 10/10.

Are we going to miss this masterpiece totally?
The music actually leaked on the net - it is wonderful. However, the audio quality is poor. The original CDs have been shipped to those who have ordered it online - but not for India - It seems, there is a note on the CD label: "Not for sale in India and Pakistan" :( Heard that there is lots and lots of additional programming and strings backing in all songs which beautifies the song more and more.
The movie is creating waves in many film festivals the world over. It also features in the list of top-10 Canadian movies of 2005. The movie is critically well acclaimed too, and Deepa Mehta is receiving applause and appreciations for the movie all over. It's a pity that the dirty politics in India deprives us of such a beautiful movie and the masterpiece of the Asian Mozart.

Talking about Rajini, how can I leave out the 2 ads that were released just today! Yeah.. I am talking about the ads of Sivaji which appeared in newspapers today - to announce the starting of shooting for the movie. With a deadly team of Rajini, A.R.Rahman, Shankar, AVM, Vairamuthu and Thotta Tharani, the expectations of this film have touched the skies right from the day it was announced!
Here are the ads. (Courtesy: Rajinifans.com)

Surya's next flick Ghajini is all set to release next weekend... Going by the movie-stills and the story-line (Surya suffering from 15-minute-amnesia), it is sure that the movie is inspired from Guy Pierce starrer Memento. Some of the tatoos on Surya's body are ditto from Memento (Find him, Kill him is one). The placement of Tatoo's on Surya's body, the fonts used etc., are also similar to the that of the original movie!

The original movie had a wonderful screenplay - very very different but very difficult to understand! Hope Director Murugadoss has just taken the theme and proceeded with his own screenplay - else the movie will face the same fate as 12-B - the audience won't understand and the movie will have a tuff time at Box Office!

After the huge hit Thenaali, Kamal Hassan, KS Ravikumar and ARR are joining hands in Dasaavathaaram. This move is one to watch out for due to many reasons, one of them being that Kamal is doing 10 different roles. Kamal is flying to US to learn the American Accent...

So, one more ARR Tamizh ablum can be expected next year. Already in the pipeline are Jillendru oru kaadhal, Rajni's Shivaji (not confirmed). Oh.. I am so excited......

Update: ARR opted out of Dasavathaaram

Wow... what a combination!!!
Would be really great if ARR also joins in... There are conflicting reports about ARR working for this movie.

Shivaji is the name of the film and Rajni is gonna be back with his super style unlike Chandramukhi, where the importance was for the story...

But, what is interesting is that all the news about this movie is coming only from AVM Saravanan. Not a single word from Rajni or Shankar... Where are the huge ads that start appearing even before the pooja of the film?

Whatever..... Expectations have started building already. Of course, with both Rajni's Chandramukhi and Shankar's Anniyan both becoming mega-hits, the expectations are bound to be very high.... And I am sure, Shankar will make a great movie!

Saw this brilliant movie today!!!! I would definitely rate it as one of the 10 best movies I have seen!!

There are lots of reviews on the net for this movie - I am not writing one more review - Reviewing this movie is difficult :) ....... just expressing my immediate feelings after watching the movie.

I watch only English/Thamizh/Hindi movies and usually avoid movies in other languages (donno why!!!), even if they have sub-titles. But, two movies which I saw recently destroyed my reluctance completely!!!
One is My sassy girl - a korean movie.
and the other is the this Italian movie, Life is beautiful.
Wow.. this is a masterpiece... The director has used his little grey cells (hee hee.. the effect of reading too much of Poirot) a lot, and makes us also to think a lot... The movie has just the right mix of comedy and sentiments! Your stomach will start aching as u laugh your way through the first half. The comedy is damn brilliant.. The second half portrays some emotional stuff. What is impressive is that this part too has loads of comedy mixed in it - but the comedy itself makes you feel a lot!

A brilliant movie... a must watch!!!
